During the decades of my life as an obstetrician, I have witnessed and lived through the enormous changes that have been sweeping through our profession. Advances in our understanding of the pathophysiology of pregnancy and fetal life combined with many technological innovations have ushered in significant improvements in our practice and have led also to progressive recognition of the fetus as a patient.
