WELCH - The federal Bureau of Prisons' planned minimumsecurity prison in McDowell County moved closer to construction when the agency opened public comment Dec. 10 on a draft environmental impact statement for the facility.
The prison, which would create 350 jobs, would house 1,100 to 1,200 inmates, said Gordon Lambert, president of the McDowell County Commission.
The site being considered is part of the Indian Ridge Industrial Park on state Route 16, near the McDowellWyoming county line.
The park is a 600-acre parcel of a 6,300-acre tract that McDowell County purchased in 1997 from the Berwind Land Corp. for economic development. Of Indian Ridge's 600 acres, the BOP needs 250.
