Introduction

As a nurse who is male, I have never been allowed to forget my gender. Women, too, face gender issues within nursing practice, but as a male I have experienced professional terrorism, from the subtle to the outright blatant, at the hands of my nursing peers. As part of my nursing experience, I have received token job interviews, I have been segregated from my female peers during nursing education sessions, I have been denied access to nurses' work settings and I have been the subject of gossip and challenges made against my ability to professionally carry out my nursing work, all because of my gender.
