In last week's U.S. Supreme Court decision upholding the University of Michigan's law-school admission policy, Justice Sandra Day O'Connor wrote that "diversity is a compelling state interest in the context of university admissions." Diversity is also a compelling state interest in the context of university museum acquisitions --at least at UVM's Fleming Museum. A modest exhibition highlighting the results of that compelling interest, entitled "Recent Acquisitions: 20th-Century Prints, Drawings, and Paintings," is currently on display in the museum's Wolcott Gallery.
