THE CULTURE WAR is back. After staggering numbly through the first few post-election days, I started to feel a horrible déjà vu. It was the late '80s all over again: posturing zealots, lip service to federalism, a president angling to rewrite the Constitution, and the national dialogue shrinking to calling anyone you don't agree with immoral--or, if you are a lefty, calling him or her a fascist. Or, when that fails, a terrorist. The good old days just keep getting better.
