DISTANCE EDUCATION, the process of learning through either videoconferencing or the interactive use of the World Wide Web, has become a major force in higher education in the United States.
Distance education offers special advantages for African Americans. For many blacks, distance learning removes the awkward discomforts often attendant in campus living at a predominantly white university. Because blacks on average have median family incomes that are only three fifths of those of white families, distance education tends to be an affordable alternative compared to living on campus and attending college in the traditional way.
