The Bush Administration's energy policy, which encourages coal- fired power production, seems to be contrary to recent actions by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which will begin tough new regulations on emissions of particulate matter smaller than 2.5 microns (PM 2.5), as well as mercury (Fig 1). But judging from recent test results at FirstEnergy Corp's (Akron, Ohio) R E Burger station, the two activities are not contradictory at all.
