CVRD restructures kaolin business, gets potash exploration concession

Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD) made two announcements concerning its industrial minerals businesses. The company reorganized the ownership structure of its kaolin assets by selling its stake in Para Pigmentos SA (PPSA) for $117.8 million to its subsidiary Caemi Mineracao e Metalurgia. CVRD also said that it won the right to research, evaluate and explore a potash deposit in Argentina's Neuquen province.

Caemi is a major player in the global kaolin business through its Cadam subsidiary. The consolidation brings PPSA and Cadam together under Caemi. PPSA and Cadam produce different and complementary types of kaolin for paper coating.
