I. THE EMERGING DISCIPLINE OF ENGINEERING EDUCATION
The vitality of any discipline depends on the vigor of its community of scholars and their dedication to the advancement of knowledge through research. In the 1980s, it became apparent that the United States faced serious challenges in its higher education system, especially in engineering, mathematics, and the sciences. For example, a National Science Board (NSB) committee expressed in a 1986 report, Undergraduate Science, Mathematics and Engineering Education:
