ALASKA'S GOVERNOR TALKING TO BP ABOUT SAVING GTL PLANT; BIOMASS-, COAL-TO-LIQUIDS MIGHT EMERGE

BP's new interest in pursuing biomass-to-liquids (BTL) for ultra- clean vehicles and ultra-low "greenhouse gas" (GHG) emissions (see GTLN, January 2005, p6) potentially could lead to new efforts to save BP's demonstration GTL plant in Alaska.

Alaska Gov. Frank Murkowski (R) last month revealed in his "state of the state" speech to the legislature that the future of BP's GTL demonstration plant on the Kenai Peninsula is an "important issue."

"I discussed this matter with [BP] officials in London last week and there may be a practical commercial application for the facility that could also involve the University of Alaska-Fairbanks," Murkowski said.
