Despite assertions by past and current White House residents that the United States is not in the business of nation-building, the Army's experience in Afghanistan and Iraq convinces us otherwise. Even a cursory glance at the past 15 years reinforces this conclusion; the United States-and in particular the U.S. Army-has been heavily involved in nation-building activities in Panama, Haiti, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan and now Iraq. Pretending that nation-building is not now nor will in the future be a logical second step to warfare as it is practiced by the United States is at best self-delusional.
