Cesarean delivery rates have risen substantially in the past several years. One explanation may be that trial of labor is not being fully used because of fear of uterine rupture. Medical studies on trial of labor indicate that there is a risk of uterine rupture of under 1.0%, but this should not be interpreted to mean that cesarean delivery is a safe alternative. Cesarean delivery is major abdominal surgery with all the risk that entails, including infection and anesthesia. Some studies go further and add to the belief that cesarean delivery may increase complications in subsequent pregnancies, complications that include placenta previa, placental abruption, and ectopic pregnancy.
