This excellent study examines the social repercussions of Beirut's role as a financial, trade, and banking center in the Middle East during Lebanon's post- independent years (1943-1975). Throughout the study focus is on the factors leading to the widening of the Beirut-Lebanon social disparity. The author's main contention is that this disparity and resulting instability was a result of the city's aforementioned role.
