Diffuse cerebral anoxia and brain stem death

Introduction

The brain stem comprises of the medulla, pons and the mesencephalon (Figure 1). It functions as a conduction pathway for motor and sensory impulses, containing all the ascending and descending tracts that communicate between the spinal cord and the brain. The reticular formation is the central core of the brain stem and contains the vital reflex centres responsible for, amongst other things, respiration and cardiac activity.1 When damage to this area has been such that its function is irreversibly destroyed, the condition is described as brain stem death.2
