On June 23, 2000, a 55 pound Belgium Malinois dog, Atlas, was in the second month on the City of Miami Police Force. Officer Wayne Cooper had been taking a ribbing about Atlas looking too small for the job. On a predawn patrol with Atlas, Officer Cooper spotted a two door Chevy reported stolen. As they approached the vehicle, a man jumped out of the driver's seat and ran. Cooper and Atlas took off after the suspect, who fired, shooting Atlas in the abdomen, and then fired at Cooper. Although mortally wounded, Atlas kept chase until the suspect was apprehended. He died from the gunshot wound.
