PURCHASING LAND for productive purposes, particularly agriculture, in Jamaica is one option at which investors may want to look.
The two main traditional crops in Jamaica are sugar and bananas. This is changing, however, and more non-traditional crops are holding their own in the export market.
According to the Caribbean Regional Human Resource and Development Programme for Export Competitiveness (CPEC), after a decade of rapid export growth (1985-1995), 1996 showed a decline of 9 per cent in Jamaican exports of non-traditional fruit and vegetables, this although world demand for exotics continues to grow steadily and ethnic products are appearing in the more traditional retail outlets.
