Engaging in public work, and especially public policy, is part of the heritage of family-focused professionals. The early history of the American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) is filled with evidence of engagement in federal, state, and local policymaking (Pundt, 1980). Public work, work that contributes to the evolving democracy, is fundamental to family wellbeing. And, what more important public work can there be than that of the development and strengthening of families as the basic unit of democracy?
