Article: Taiwan: Increased financial difficulties

According to the 2000 settlement of 14 listed synthetic fiber producers in Taiwan, eight producers announced losses before taxes. Far Eastern Textile Ltd. had maintained stable profits, but was forced into red figures. It is said that even three producers of the Formosa Plastics Group including Nan Ya Plastics Corporation, which had registered profits, might register losses, as their synthetic fiber business was in a weak condition. The hard fight of Taiwanese producers has resulted in large-scale production curtailments and sluggish market conditions compelled by China's tightening of regulations against illegal imports and the promotion of selfsupply by the IL (import license) system.
