Anesthesia Lawsuit Allowed to Proceed

In May 1998, a patient underwent a general anesthetic for a diagnostic laparoscopy for suspected endometriosis. During the preoperative visit the anesthesia provider advised the patient that she "might experience hoarseness and a sore throat for 24 to 48 hours after the surgery." When the patient awoke from anesthesia in the postanesthesia care unit (PACU) she had severe throat pain, which continued for at least 48 hours. The throat pain subsided some but persisted at such severity that the patient saw 20 specialists over the next 18 months to determine the cause of the pain.
