This issue of The Teacher Educator communicates work that demonstrates a national emphasis on improving the quality of thought undertaken in undergraduate teacher education programs. Three of the papers provide practical and theoretical attention to promoting effective higher order thinking within the context of education courses and early field experiences. Improving the quality of thinking in future teachers is a grand and common goal. Focusing on the development of "reflective practitioners" in teacher education is intended to provide all teachers with the necessary cognitive tools and skills to increase the quality of decision making in their professional lives.
