Israel: AIDS War Begins

Jerusalem, (WFS) - In 2004, Israel reported a rise of 9 per cent in new HIV cases. Women appear to be the most vulnerable to HIV/AIDS. Since 2000, the rate of infection among women has risen by 10 per cent.

Compared to other developed countries in the West, where only 20 per cent of the women are HIV+, Israel's high rate of infection is a cause of worry for the Ministry of Health.

Vered Ben-Herut, manager of the support department in the Israeli AIDS Task Force, says, "Seven years ago (1998), the average age of women infected by HIV was 30 years. Now, the average age is 17-19 years."
