CPS unveils new reading program

As Mayor Richard Daley's "One Book, One Chicago" reading idea urges everyone to read a popular novel and Oprah Winfrey's book club flourishes, schools chief Arne Duncan introduced Thursday a reading plan aimed at improving the teaching of reading so every student reads "as soon as possible.

"Literacy is best learned from earliest ages. My goal is to instill a love of learning and reading from the time students enter our schools," Duncan said.

"It's a kindergarten-to-12th grade initiative with an intense focus on early literacy," he said of the program, billed the Chicago Reading Initiative.
