Cia Siderugica Nacional (CSN), a Brazilian steelmaker, has diversified into the tin market. In April, the company bought from Cia Estanifera do Brasil (Cesbra) its Estanhos de Rondonia (Ersa) subsidiary for $38.85 million.
Ersa is a tin mining and smelting company. Cesbra is getting out of the tin mining and smelting business. Instead, the company said it will concentrate on its tin solder and chemicals business. The company operates the Volta Redonda plant in Rio de Janeiro state.
Ersa produces about 1.5 kt/a (1,650 stpy) of tin at its Santa Barbara Mine in Rondonia state. Expansion plans are in the works, which CSN said will continue. Expansion plans are to increase contained ...
