WATKINS GLEN - Racing fans from across the nation and around the world know the name "Watkins Glen." The Southern Tier village began hosting road races in 1948 and eight years later, racing had moved off the streets and onto a permanent 2.3-mile track.
In 1957, Watkins Glen hosted its first stock-car race and by 1961 the track was a stop on the Formula One racing circuit. The track's reputation grew throughout the 1970s before owner Grand Prix Corporation's financial troubles closed the facility in 1981. It sat idle for two years before Coming, Inc. bought the property and brought in a partner to manage Watkins Glen.
