As with many other people, Popeye was one of the earliest "strong and muscular" stereotypes that I was exposed to. I once had a client tell me that she ate spinach "just like Popeye," and could not understand why her doctor had diagnosed her with iron deficiency anemia (IDA). There are a number of misconceptions surrounding the cause of this very common condition during pregnancy. The purpose of this article is to provide basic information about why adequate iron stores are required during pregnancy and to discuss preventative measures expectant mothers can take to minimize their risk of IDA.
