Until about 20 years ago, there wasn't much debate regarding the proper method of leaning an engine. For the most part, Continental and Lycoming agreed that you shouldn't run on the lean side of peak, although both companies did admit to a few exceptions. The 1984 Malibu raised some eyebrows when Continental recommended running the airplane's TSIO-520 on the lean side of peak and Lycoming has always allowed more flexibility in leaning some of its engines (specifically, the 10-360 and 10-540), but generally, both companies stuck to the traditional advice not to lean past peak EGT.
