Article: Scribe Marking System

The US Patent and Trademark Office intends to issue a patent to Columbia Marking Tools Inc. (Chesterfield Township, MI) covering the company's programmable scribe marking technology. The patent relates to marking scribes that encode data onto hard materials, and particularly to scribes that encode data represented by 2-D matrix codes.

This marking technology will be referred to as the UID/Matrix 2D marking system. The designation UID refers to the US DOD acronym for Unique Identification. On January 1, 2007, all components and parts purchased by DOD must be marked with 2-D reference codes.
