Self-Reflection-An Important Process for the Therapist

In the therapeutic process, it is the client that is the focus, with the therapist looking at transference and countertransference reactions as a way to facilitate treatment and enhance the interaction. But, the therapist is not a "blank sheet," the interaction impacts him or her as well and provides an opportunity for learning and reviewing old experiences. Self-reflection by the therapist serves to understand that impact and use it to participate more fully in the process of selfawareness and change (Kantrowitz, 1997).
