Slow Food Movement Gains Momentum

It was May -- the beginning of the planting season in Vermont. My mother was planting seedlings -- alternating pepper plants with marigolds to help repel the aphid bugs from the peppers. I was just two-and-a-half years old and she had left me with some toys at the edge of the garden. Almost done with her planting, she looked up to survey her work and found me instead. With all the pepper plants in one hand and the marigolds in the other, I proudly stated, "See, I'm helping."

Although that is my mother's favorite story to tell about me and the gardens, there are countless others which reveal how much, as my father likes to say, we lived "off the grid." At their peak, our gardens were over ...
