The day is fast approaching when area residents call look back on the notorious words written by Gene Weingarten, and laugh. "WilkesBarre, Pa., may he awful, but next-door neighbor Scranton is awfuler, and Scranton has a certain likable pugnacity that comes from knowing you are famously crummy and not giving two hoots," Weingarten wrote in The Washington Post, as he bestowed the title of "Armpit of America" on Battle Mountain, Nevada.

People in both cities were angry, even though Weingarten had a point. Look back at 2001 and reflect on the blocks of run-down storefronts, and even the proudest will admit the man was onto something.
