Ophthalmologists may be first to spot elder abuse

Baltimore-Elder abuse is a relatively common occurrence, with more than 1 million cases reported each year in the United States. In all likelihood, elder abuse is underreported, according to Myron Miller, MD.

"Elder abuse is defined as the willful infliction of pain, injury, or mental anguish on an older individual," said Dr. Miller, professor of medicine in the department of medicine, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, and director of the division of geriatric medicine, Sinai Hospital in Baltimore.

Dr. Miller highlighted the risk factors for elder abuse and what to look for during a physical examination.
