I have conducted the exercise of taking all the official champions, plus those Kasparov recognises as legitimate precursors, and analysed their results amongst themselves. We now have a pool of eighteen names and I arranged them in order, awarding 36 points for number one, down to two for number eighteen, based on the percentages scored in all contests which might be considered to have been for the title. Thus I included Staunton's thunderous series of 1840's match wins against the European masters St Amant, Horwitz and Harrwitz, but I excluded a Steinitz match win v Blackburne which predated 1866, Steinitz's own date for his accession to the Purple.
