Fortunately birth defects occur in only a small percentage of newborns, but we must still try to understand the causes of birth defects to help prevent them and to help those who are born with them. The following studies aid in this understanding by looking at the childbearing and survival rates of men and women born with birth defects. Both studies deal not with one specific type of birth defect but with a range of birth defects recorded at the time of birth or during the initial hospitalization. This has the advantage of allowing the authors to make comparisons among different types of birth defects and to see the link, if any, between the probability of dissimilar birth ...
