Antiretroviral Therapy Helps HIV Mortality Rate Decline among Black IDUs

Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) is reducing 90% of HIV deaths among African-American injection drug users (IDUs), a population for which there has been little data until now because of its historical lack of access to expensive therapies, according to a study published in the June 15 issue of the American Journal of Epidemiology.

Data from the 14-year prospective Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome Link to Intravenous Experiences (ALIVE) Study has shown that the pricey multidrug therapy can reduce late-stage HIV infection in the disadvantaged population when given the opportunity to do so.
