CHARLES TOWN - When Peggy Smith, a 64-year-old retired banker and Jefferson County native, began her campaign for mayor earlier this year, she put her pro-growth stance front and center.
Many here would argue Charles Town already has plenty of growth. The 219-year-old city, named for George Washington's younger brother, is best known for its history (notably hosting John Brown's treason trail and subsequent hanging in 1859.) The town also is known for its gambling, namely the nearly 4,000 slot machines at Charles Town Races & Slots. And lately, the town has become a top destination for Maryland and Virginia residents flooding in from Washington's suburbs.
