Article: City uses state law to deny store sign

La Crosse officials dusted off a state law Friday to deny a sign that would read "Pleasures A Lovers Boutique" from going up over the adult bookstore on Third Street.

The La Crosse Sign Company had requested a permit to install the sign over the sidewalk outside Pleasures at 405-407 S. Third St.

But the Board of Public Works voted Friday against the sign, citing a state law that prohibits signs from being in the state highway right-ofway. Third and Fourth streets in downtown La Crosse are part of Hwy. 53.

The move came even though City Engineer Randy Turtenwald pointed out the city has ignored the law for years, as have other cities with state highways going through their downtowns.
