Q: What are the top two priorities for local government?
A: I continue to be amazed by the diversity of local government. There are probably more priorities than there are councils, and there are over 700 councils. For indigenous communities in central Australia, the priorities may be potable water and all-weather access. In urban areas, many are concerned about urban renewal and traffic management. Rural communities will often be intent on creating local jobs to stop their young people leaving for the city, and maintaining the roads to primary producers.
In general, I would like to see councils listening to their communities and embracing financial management.
