SAN DIEGO - Researchers at the University of California, San Diego have identified how white blood cells boost their fighting power against bacteria, a discovery providing useful information for potential new treatments.

A recent study, led by Randall Johnson, UCSD professor of biology and Victor Nizet, associate professor of pediatrics at the UCSD School of Medicine, shows that when exposed to disease-causing bacteria, white blood cells increase their levels of hypoxia inducible transcription factor-1, or HIF-I, a protein that causes white blood cells to release antimicrobial compounds.
