Who's Home in Prairie Dog Town?

It's a busy morning in prairie dog town.

"Grrr! Grrrr!" argue two black-tailed prairie dog brothers, grinding their teeth. Close by, Mom nibbles and cleans their sister's short fur while a cousin dig, dig, digs a hole. Farther away, Auntie snacks on a blade of buffalo grass.

"Chirk, chirk!" warns Dad, who has spotted a golden eagle high in the sky. All across town, prairie dogs watch the eagle and chirk to alert others who have not seen it. When the eagle swoops lower, Dad announces the danger loudly. "CHIRK!" In a flash, the prairie dog families dive into their burrows. They wait safely underground for the eagle to fly away.
