Children's literature can enlighten teacher candidates who are preparing to teach in schools with diverse populations.
Teacher educators are being challenged to prepare teacher candidates for work with diverse students. The candidates are predominantly European-American, middle-class, and monolingual; have had limited experiences with diverse populations; and may perceive diversity in a negative way (Zeichner and Hoeft 1996). Teacher candidates' lack of understanding of diversity issues can negatively affect the educational success of their students (Gay 2002).
