Music emanates from headphones, accompanies advertisements on television, blares from car speakers, wafts through department stores, elevators, and hospital wards, and now even plays on stereos in classrooms. Certainly, then, we live in a musically active culture, a culture where music of all kinds is thriving. So why should we be concerned with the state of music education?
The one element common to all of the previous examples is that a machine is producing the music. We have become the passive receptors of musical sound, sometimes without even being aware of it.
