Music emanates from headphones, accompanies advertisements on television, blares from car speakers, wafts through department stores, elevators, and hospital wards, and now even plays on stereos in classrooms. Certainly, then, we live in a musically active culture, a culture where music of all kinds is thriving. So why should we be concerned with the state of music education?
