THE CASSETTE TAPE, an oft-derided music format, has found its public defenders just as the technology fades into the analog sunset. In the recently published Mix Tape: The Art of Cassette Culture (Universe, $22.50), indie rocker and New York City art-about Thurston Moore has edited a valentine to the cassette's most endearing and revolutionary function: the ability to pick the tunes you liked and line 'em up just so.
