Around here, people were glad to see the end of 1965. It had not been a very good year. New Orleans was just putting itself together four months after lives and homes were blown apart by Hurricane Betsy.
The Beatles and their ilk had taken over the national music scene, and few were interested in the New Orleans brand of rhythm and blues, the music everyone had been crazy about just a few short years ago.
There were no Saints to agonize over, and the LSU football team's three losses in the regular season had included shutouts by Ole Miss and Alabama.
The federal government, in cooperation with City Hall, was about to build a six-lane highway along the river, hulking over the French Quarter.
