Consumer protection in an enlarged Europe

Breda Kutin discusses changes in consumer rotection law, as experienced by a consumer organisation in a new EU Member State

ABSTRACT

To evaluate the changes to consumer protection in the EU one year after accession, it is necessary to understand the environment, culture and values in the new Member States before political and economical change took place. The new consumer protection structures put in place have largely been due to the need to harmonise to meet EU membership criteria. A consumer culture needs to develop and consumer protection can be strong only with a joint EU effort.
