In 2001 I asked the manager of the Triple A ball club, Iowa Cubs for an assessment of his 6' 5" 255 lb. ace hurler, Carlos Zambrano.

"Basically," said Bruce Kim, "he's got above average stuff, but he has to get it under control."

Two years later his "above average stuff" helped propel the Chicago Cubs into the playoffs. In 2004, he was the only consistent bright spot in an injury-riddled rotation.

Even as a 19-year-old minor leaguer, the Venezuelan native was compared to the all star hurler, Kevin Brown, because of his 96-mph sinker. Consistently throughout his first three years in the minors he excelled in one important category - registering more strikeouts than innings pitched.
