Port of Ghent is keen to attract more liner services as it expands
THE PORT OF GHENT in Belgium plans to grow its business through the addition of a new dock and the provision of more short sea connections for unaccompanied trailers.
Founded in the Middle Ages, today Ghent is a medium-sized port (the second busiest in Belgium after Antwerp) with water-borne cargo traffic of 42 million tonnes in 2004. Of this total, 25 million tonnes was transported by sea and 17 million tonnes by inland waterways. A further 11 million tonnes of intermodal transport passed through the port last year - six million tonnes of road traffic and five million tonnes by rail.
