In 2000 artist Jesse Gardner and his wife Yu Hong Chen bought a fixer-upper in Northern Liberties for $30,000. Over the next five years they slowly renovated the house while renting a loft in Chinatown.

"We built this house with our own sweat," Gardner says. "Everything we have, we achieved through hard work."

The couple, along with their 4-year-old daughter, finally moved into their home near Fourth and George streets in December. But after living in Northern Liberties for just nine months, Gardner and his wife are considering packing up.

Gardner says it's because his family members--like many of their neighbors--feel unsafe in the community.
