Whenever there were double sevens in the year, Momus' parade seemed to create quite a stir.

In 1877 the theme of Momus' march was "Hades, A Dream of Momus." The floats poked fun at the era of Reconstruction which then was in its waning days. The carpetbaggers were not amused. Gov. Francis Nicholls, fearing the parade might disrupt the uneasy peace with those in Washington, sent a telegram with an apology to the state's envoy at the capital. Momus, imp that he was, had created political trouble. There would be no more satires in parades again, at least not for another century.
