The importance of including children in family therapy has been repeatedly emphasized in the literature (e.g., Combrinck-Graham, 1989; Moss-Kagel, Abramovitz, & Sager, 1989; Zilbach, 1986). In fact, Nathan Ackerman, one of the founders of the field of family therapy, wrote that "without engaging the children in a meaningful interchange across the generations, there can be no family therapy" (1970, p. 403). However, Ackerman also acknowledged that "in the daily practice of this form of treatment, difficulties in mobilizing the participation of children are a common experience" (1970, p. 403).
