Paying bills by touch instead of by check

Q: I like the idea of saving time by paying my bills electronically, but using a computer to do it seems too complicated. Is there a simpler alternative?

A: More and more banks will let you pay bills via Touch-Tone phone. If yours doesn't, you can sign up with one of several services, such as Payline (800-572-9546) or CheckFree (800-882-5280). You'll give the service information about billers you expect to pay regularly and identify the bank account the money will come from. Then each month, you'll punch in the necessary payment information--who, when, and how much--on your phone. The service will pay your billers electronically, if possible, or ...
